In Relation: Black Material Life and Memory on Mi’kma’ki brings together historical and contemporary works by Edith Clayton, Clara Clayton Gough, Sylvia D. Hamilton, Kwame Owusu Brobbey, Tyshan Wright, Jan Wade, and materials by unknown makers. Through basketry, textiles, ceramics, sculpture, video, and archival materials, the exhibition explores how memory, knowledge, and cultural traditions are carried through material forms. By placing Ethiopian and African Nova Scotian practices in conversation, it highlights shared approaches to making, gathering, and remembering. The exhibition considers how Black diasporic life is shaped not only by movement across places, but by what is made, sustained, and remembered within community. Curated by Nahom Assefa.
