Doucette offers, "It is difficult to describe the embodied experience brought on by immersing myself in a memory: sometimes it is a numbing in the soft palate of my mouth, or a warm tug in my chest. Memory can be nuanced by time and emotion, rendering it unreliable. Though memory may not be honest to the actual truth, my paintings of memory are an honest documentation of how I feel and what I have experienced. In Stepping Forward, Sifting Through I weave together fragments of memory to create an autobiographical narrative, translating these embodied experiences from a place only I can access, into a language that can be understood without words."
