Please Seat Yourself
Murryn Steele

May 27 - 31, 2025

Gallery 1

undergraduate exhibitor

"Please Seat Yourself" features a re-imagination of "The Amazing Ted's Restaurant" as a visual guide to the thought that strangers, friends, and staff who contribute to our third spaces may never be entirely forgotten, bulldozed or painted over. “The Amazing Ted’s Restaurant” has become an enduring landmark for Scarborough patrons looking for a truly comforting dining experience for just over 70 years with decor that spans decades of design. Steele unifies colour, original pattern, and illustrations from the restaurant and it's exterior to create a cohesive body of ceramic work. “Please Seat Yourself” looks directly at our abandonment of personalized third space interiors and the people that thrive within them, and asks folks to find glimmers of ornamentation in their own beautiful third spaces.
