it’s not what you give, but what you don’t take away is a mixed media installation which instrumentalizes sound arts, drawing, photography, and letter writing to probe the boundaries of language as a social structure. Through the alteration and interpolation of dialogue from television shows, readings from popular novels, and field recordings, the exhibition opens space for an earnest engagement with the legacy and merit of vernacular language. By means of juxtaposition and definition by contrast, the work posits the primary question: if words are a given, what’s left to say?
