SOW TO SEW: The "Lake Egmont Quilt" Offsite Day

The Lake Egmont Quilt Offsite Day: part of the Sow to Sew Symposium

• Pick up and drop off at: NSCAD University, 5163 Duke St (Fountain Campus)
• Bus transportation and workshop materials provided. Bring your own lunch. Registration limited (first come first served). 

As part of the Sow to Sew Symposium and "Sustain-abilities: Craft at the Edge of the Earth" Exhibition at the Anna Leonowens Gallery curated by NSCAD MFA student Amanda Blake (September 15-26), this offsite day is a community workshop and a collaborative research and making project. Hosted by three exhibiting artists and past recipients of the Sow to Sew Project’s Sustainability in Craft Research Grants: Cameryn Mattie, a recent NSCAD ceramics graduate and current ceramics instructor; current NSCAD Masters of Art Education student Gillian Richards; and weaver and NSCAD BFA student Baily Smith.

Together, we will journey to a property on Lake Egmont in the Musquodoboit Valley to create a collaborative quilt. There, Baily, Cameryn and Gillian will each speak about their research in conjunction with the land and lead us through a part of their making processes. With Baily, we will learn to mud dye textiles using what’s on the land. With Cameryn, we will learn about harvesting clay and create ceramic charms. Finally, Gillian will lead us in cattail harvesting to use as a natural form of quilt batting to fill our dyed textile pieces. All of these materials will then finish being processed by our hosts back at NSCAD and brought together to form a community quilt.
