CREATING WITH COMMUNITY PROJECT OVERVIEW 

Creating with Community is an Indigenous Youth Roots funded project, hosted by the NSCAD Treaty Space Gallery. This series of Indigenous-taught workshops seeks to increase the wellness, resiliency, and engagement of Indigenous youth through providing access to arts, art-based workshops, cultural knowledge, and traditions. The workshops are offered free of charge for participants, with priority given to Indigenous youth participants. 

 

JOB OVERVIEW 

The incumbent will collaborate with the three youth project leaders to accomplish successful delivery of programming. They will be responsible for: 

 

  • LIASON WITH ARTISTS: respectful communication with Indigenous artists to invite them to participate and determine availability; verify artist bios and event descriptions, obtain payment information. 

  • SETUP/GREET: assist youth leader in purchasing and setting up refreshments for events; coordinate with Facilities team at event location to set up tables/chairs; source materials from Indigenous-owned businesses; ensure participants sign in at each event. 

  • REPORTING: track overall time spent on prepping, designing, planning, outreach, delivery, and evaluation; lead check-ins and/or feedback discussions at each event; participant tracking. 

  • PROMO/SOCIAL MEDIA POSTINGS: Instagram and Anna Leonowens website promotional posts; create event descriptions; add accessibility tags; add account tags; outreach to accounts to repost; print and display posters. 

  • SOCIAL MEDIA DESIGNS: assist project leader with digital Instagram graphics, website graphics, and poster designs when needed. 

 

REQUIREMENTS & ELIGIBILITY 

The ideal candidate for the Creating with Community Indigenous Youth Assistant position will be between ages 16-30 at the start of employment and belong to an Indigenous group. They will come to the position with strong organizational skills, solid computer skills, and research and writing experience. Experience or knowledge of Indigenous cultures and working with Indigenous community members are considered assets. Experience using design software is also considered an asset. The incumbent must have excellent verbal and written communication skills, be able to set goals and priorities, and work independently as well as part of a team. The incumbent must be located regionally in Kjipuktuk/Halifax area to work onsite.

This position is funded through Indigenous Youth Roots Small Project Funding Stream. An individual may be eligible for an internship if they: 

  • are a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident, or have refugee status in Canada (non-Canadians holding temporary work visas or awaiting permanent status are not eligible); 

  • are legally entitled to work in Canada; 

  • are willing to commit to the full duration of the work assignment; 

  • are unemployed or underemployed
