Course Code: ARTS 3505 (Independent Study: Interdisciplinary)  
6 credits (18 hours per week)  
Intern will receive $1000 stipend

Instructed by Anna Leonowens, Visiting Artist Program, and Treaty Space Gallery staff, the selected interns will acquire a comprehensive understanding of Anna Gallery operations

Stream A) Instructed by Anna Leonowens and Treaty Space Gallery exhibitions Coordinators and Anna Director, the selected interns will acquire a comprehensive understanding of gallery operations and the practical skills essential to managing an exhibition space. Spending 18 hours (across 3 days) per week in the gallery during open hours, the selected intern will gain hands-on experience in assisting exhibiting artists, art handling, installation methods, exhibition design, communications and promotions. A major focus of the internship includes expanding on the gallery’s existing web and social media presence, developing capabilities in promotional and critical writing. The intern will also have the opportunity to assist with the installation of several professional exhibitions by faculty and visiting artists.  

Stream B) Instructed by Visiting Artist Program Coordinator, Anna Director, as well as NSCAD Communications Director, the selected intern will acquire a comprehensive understanding of event communications and the practical skills essential to managing a speaker series. Spending 18 hours (across 3 days) per week, the selected intern will gain hands-on experience in assisting artists, VA project development, community partnership building, event program design, communications and promotions. A major focus of the internship includes expanding on print, web and social media presence for NSCAD's Visiting Artist Program and Public Lecture Series, developing capabilities in promotional and critical writing. The intern will also have the opportunity to assist with the hosting of visiting artists. Skills in Abode Suite an asset.

 

The Anna Leonowens Gallery (The Anna) has hosted nearly 5000 exhibitions and projects since 1968. A unique exhibition space, The Anna's pedagogical mandate is to equip emerging artists and curators with hands-on, practical experience. Interns will benefit from the personal experience of gallery staff. Ultimately, the aim of these courses is to provide a unique experiential learning opportunity where participants will receive a well-rounded behind-the-scenes look at the reality of being a professional arts worker. 

Learning outcomes: 

Stream A)
- Gain an understanding of best practices as they pertain to the coordination of a gallery program of numerous exhibitions 
- Assist Exhibitions Coordinators and Director in fielding exhibition applications, determining the characteristics of a successful application  
- Hands-on gallery skills including art handling, installation, gallery lighting and preparing interpretive signage/wall texts 
- Writing and developing online content, with the knowledge of how digital promotions and social media play a key role in the operations of the gallery 

Stream B)

- Gain an understanding of best practices as they pertain to the coordination of a Visiting Artist program of numerous highly regarded artists and designers from around the world.
- Assist VA Program Coordinators and Directors in fielding communications, determining the characteristics of a successful VA visit and public engagement.
- Hands-on project management skills including artist handling, event coordination, and preparing schedules and itineraries. 
- Writing and developing online content, with the knowledge of how digital promotions and social media play a key role in the operations of the NSCAD Visiting Artist Program and Public Lecture Series.
