A Whisper in Cipher

Mar 7 - 18, 2023

Gallery 2

MFA Thesis exhibition

A Whisper in Cipher is scored by the narrative of a body from elsewhere. There are 33 fragmented stories projecting the experiences of being monitored, controlled and politically muted as an individual citizen and female person. The experiences exist in the entanglement of here and there, known and unknown, the visible and the invisible, where technology serves as the apparatus of power that translates flesh and blood into data for governance. In exploring these experiences, the exhibition reveals just a fraction of the collective identity of self-exiled Chinese people. Ultimately, it presents the encoded experience of a displaced being.
