She Tows the Line is a series of ready-made sculptures, fabricated objects, photos, and video that explores tradition and superstition in relation to the lobster fishing industry. As a fisherman who works on her late grandfather’s boat, the artist addresses his belief that women were bad luck aboard. She borrows from the tradition of including nude female figureheads on ships as a means of “calming the seas” to transform herself into a symbol of good luck. Through this work, Howlett aims to pay homage to tradition in the industry, while forcefully claiming and carving space for herself within it.
