CIMADE Visiting Artist
Indigenous Interdisciplinary artist Cheryl L’Hirondelle presents a new work created during a 2024 two-part artist-in-residency presented by the Centre for Inter-media Arts and Decolonial Expression (CIMADE), with support from Anna Leonowens Gallery Systems of NSCAD University. The installation is a graphic and sonic score using local bird songs, site-specific audio, and handdrum using a time signature the artist interpreted from crashing waves along various shorelines in and around Kjipuktuk. The work incorporates hyper-directional audio, video and viewer participation to interpret the score so that all can create their own personal song of "right relations" with the beings and the land at this place known as Kjipuktuk. The score's title is derived from the 1763 decree by King George III, who granted 235 acres of common land “for the use of the inhabitants of the Town of Halifax forever.”
